A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
BYU holds New Student Orientation (NSO) four times per academic year, just prior to the start of classes. All new students, including transfer students, are expected to attend. The purpose of NSO is to welcome new students to the BYU community of disciple scholars, familiarize them with campus resources, and connect them with other students, faculty, and campus personnel.
BYU Sustainability partners with the Office of First-Year Experience to educate and engage incoming students and their families. Attendees are invited to follow BYU's sustainability accounts on social media, subscribe to its monthly sustainability newsletter, learn about sustainability-related classes and majors, and attend service projects. Giveaways include reusable utensil kits, eco-friendly laundry products, and BYU Sustainability shirts and stickers. Sustainability content has also been featured in a weekly digital newsletter circulated ahead of and after NSO by the Office of First-Year Experience.
In summer 2024, all NSO lunches were served in paper carton boxes, with extra recycling bins on hand to capture and divert the waste. The Office of First-Year Experience committed to work with the Sustainability Office and BYU Recycling to improve and expand the process in the fall.
