Research Inventory
Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
The total number of employees that conduct research was determined from the number of research active faculty, as calculated by the Office of the AAVP for Research & Graduate Studies when determining the distribution of college research support funds in 2022.
The number of employees engaged in sustainability research was the sum of faculty who had publications in the area of sustainability, as identified using Faculty Profile system, and those whose creative works focused on sustainability. BYU Sustainability staff vetted the list and added other faculty members where appropriate.
The number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts research was taken to be units that grant degrees, report to the Academic Vice President, and have faculty and a department chair. Under these conditions, the following were not included though some may have research expectations: Continuing Education, Bachelor of General Studies, Counseling and Psychological Services, Undergraduate Education, Graduate Studies, Kennedy Center, Museum of Art, Women’s Studies, Harold B. Lee Library, Museum of Art, ROTC, Technology and Engineering Studies, Maxwell Institute, and Wheatley Institute.
The number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts sustainability research was the number of departments who have at least one publication in topics related to sustainability as identified by the Faculty Profile system.
The inventory of BYU’s sustainability research comes from the following files:
- Pivot_Faculty_Interests.pdf. This is a list of faculty who have listed sustainability in their Pivot profile. The information here is expected to be accurate but incomplete since not all faculty have a Pivot profile. This information was provided by the Research Development Office.
- Publications_FacultyProfile.zip. This zip folder contains seven spreadsheets which each list faculty publications as determined by the Faculty Profile system. One spreadsheet is included for each search term used, and the search term is included in the file name. This information was provided by the Faculty Center.
- CreativeWorks_FacultyProfile.zip. This zip folder contains six spreadsheets which each list creative works by faculty. One spreadsheet is included for each search term used, and the search term is included in the file name. This information was provided by the Faculty Center.
- Scopus_Report_BYU_Publications.pdf. BYU faculty publications in the related areas were listed in the SCOPUS publication database. This information was provided by the BYU Library.
- Compendex_Report_BYU.pdf. These are additional papers that were identified in the Compendix database but were not in the Scopus database. This information was provided by the BYU Library.
- ExternalGrants_Possible Sustainability.xls. This file lists recent externally funded grants in the area of sustainability. This information was provided by the Research Administration Office.
