The aims of a BYU education state, “A BYU education ... prepares students ... to improve the moral, social, and ecological environment in which they and their families live.” All instruction, programs, and services should therefore contribute "toward the balanced development of the total person," preparing individuals to "meet personal challenge and change" and bring "strength to others in the tasks of home and family life, social relationships, civic duty, and service to mankind." Students are likewised encouraged to care for one another and to care for the earth, as President Russell M. Nelson of BYU's sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught in an April 2000 worldwide message.

Degree programs with at least one sustainability-related learning outcome were counted as requiring an understanding of the concept of sustainability. In the attached inventory (see the "Learning Outcomes" tab), the 35 programs with at least one sustainability-FOCUSED learning outcome are marked as green. The number of graduates of these programs appears, provided by Enrollment Services' Academic Reports team, also appears in the attached inventory.

 

Programs with at least one sustainability-INCLUSIVE learning outcome are marked as yellow and do not include graduate counts, as those programs with sustainability-FOCUSED learning outcomes do.
