For this credit community service hours tracked by 15 Waltham Group programs were totaled along with all hours provided through experiential community engaged learning programs and the New Student Orientation. This number came out to be 35,620 hours for one year’s time. Divided between the 3,296 undergraduate students at Brandeis, this came out to 10.807 hours on average per student per year. When multiplied by 0.3 (as instructed by STARS), the final credit number is 3.24.

As it is currently, about a third of the Brandeis community provides the entirety of the community service hours, which means that perhaps it is more accurate to think of the numbers as follows: 1,209 students volunteer an average of 29.5 hours per year (35,620 divided by the 1,209 students who volunteer) and around 2,000 students do not volunteer at all. The best way to increase volunteering hours is to increase volunteer numbers rather than to ask already involved students to do more.
