Third Point of Distinction
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
BGSU has had an end of year collection program in its residence halls to help reduce waste since 2002. The program has grown in size and the volume of donations each year. Besides being able to serve a number of nonprofits and charities in need with these donations, we have also created an on campus "store" which conducts open events for the university community at the beginning of the academic year and each month during the fall and spring semesters. At these events, "customers" can take any items that they can use, with the majority of the items being free. An educational element focusing on the benefits of reuse to the environment is woven into each event. Multiple tons of items are diverted from the landfill through this program and a large percentage of the student population are able to derive benefit from the donated items.
