A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
It's been a few years, but BGSU used to have a consulting firm called Sightlines compile an annual Sustainability Report for BGSU. We have since assumed responsibility for our own climate data reporting through SIMAP. For the sake of this submission, we have referred to Sightlines' decision to choose FY12 as our baseline year. Their 2020 Report provided the following rationale:
"The included energy efficiency investments are over a 7 year period, between FY12 and
FY19
• A simple payback calculation would measure the impact of a single investment. For this calculation,
we were looking at campus-wide projects over multiple years, and therefore normalized the
investment across 5M+ square feet and 7 years
• If building level consumption is provided, we can calculate more specific payback for individual
projects
• 2012 was chosen as the base year for electricity consumption to account for the 7 year
investment period"
2012 was also the year that BGSU commited to the Presidents' Climate Commitment, so FY12 provides a good benchmark against which to measure our progress.
