Bowdoin College has crafted a campus to promote sustainable transportation, centered around bicycle transportation on campus and around the town of Brunswick. In 2022, Bowdoin College renewed its membership with the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly University at the Silver level. Bowdoin has accomplished this through infrastructure changes, bike share programs, on-campus bike repair, and more. The Yellow Bike Club grants students a Yellow Bike and allows students an equitable opportunity to easily get around campus in an emission-less manner. The Yellow Bike Club also incorporates bike repair to make this sustainable form of traveling easy and convenient. These changes have encouraged students to bike around campus and into town, saving emissions and reducing parking constraints on the campus and greater community.
Bowdoin has instituted infrastructure changes that include changes to on-road conditions within campus including traffic calming signage and speed tables, bike cut throughs, and parking out of the way of bike lanes. The College has continued to improve the quality and presence of bike racks at all building locations across campus. There are over 1830 outdoor bicycle parking locations on campus, which is about double the number of bikes on campus, ensuring that every student has a bicycle-accessible place regardless of where their classes are. Along with outdoor bicycle parking, Bowdoin has made indoor and covered bicycle storage a priority. Students in twenty–one out of the twenty–eight residential buildings have access to indoor bike storage. There are 466 indoor bike parking spaces on campus. Of the seven residential buildings without indoor bike storage four have access to covered outdoor bike storage nearby. The three residential buildings without bicycle storage are all at the end of their lifecycle and will be replaced or repurposed in the coming years. In 2022, the College unveiled two new bike repair stations placed conveniently on campus. The top-of-the-line repair stands along with three brand new covered bicycle parking areas represent Bowdoin's most recent efforts to make its campus more bicycle friendly.
