Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
“Got Food?” Pilot Program is a food donation pilot started by Zero Waste Manager, Sarah Healey in May of 2023. In 10 Buick and 33 Harry Agganis Way, this program lasted for 2 weeks (May 1st - May 14th, 2023) and received 366 lbs of food donations, which were then donated to the BU Food Pantry for all students in need. The relocation of food to the BU Food Pantry during move-out prevents residential locations from having to throw out food materials due to issues like overflow, rodents, broken glass, etc. Sarah and Resident Sustainability Leaders also collected compost and food donations at west campus, where people get rid of items from their fridges and pantries early to improve operations and divert waste. They collected 4 crates of food donations & 50lbs of compost. Even though this program at west campus was a lot shorter than at 10 Buick and 33 Harry Agganis Way, they expect a better response by leaving bins for the weekend to accept compost and food donations next year. This pilot program allowed for the dots to be connected between the existing BU food pantry and student move-out, creating a circular economy on campus for the redistribution of food. This is especially significant at a time when food waste would otherwise be high.
