Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
K-cycle K-Cup Pod Recycling Program Pilot

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

In January 2019, the Financial Affairs Department at Boston University launched the K-cycle pilot program, which gauged departmental engagement in the University-wide effort to reduce waste and promote reuse and recycling of consumable products.

Participating departments received pre-labeled boxes from Keurig, where employees placed used K-cup pods. Full boxes were sent via UPS to a recycling site where the components of the used pods were separated for proper recycling and composting. A total of 14 departments participated for the duration of the pilot, which ran from January 2019 to March 2020.

Unfortunately, further implementation of the program was placed on pause due to the pandemic. We expect with the development of our Sustainable Procurement policy, in FY2022, certain aspects of the pilot will show up in the future.
