A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Concerned with the leveling off of recycling rates among the Boston University community near 32 percent in 2012, sustainability@BU worked with occupants, custodians, and vendors to create an inventive new program to promote recycling across campus: the Trash Buddy. The Trash Buddy is a convenient desk-side receptacle with a small trash bin which rests inside a standard blue recycling bin.
In 2012, the Trash Buddy was piloted in four locations on the Charles River Campus and the results were inspiring. The recycling rates at the locations increased on average from 47.4% to 73.2%.
Encouraged by the initial success of the program, Facilities Management and Planning and sustainability@BU will extend the program to offices throughout the BU campus by Summer 2013.
