A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
The University began its sustainable cleaning program in the 1990’s to address concerns for personal safety and the desire to increase efficiencies. A major step was the installation of cleaning command centers to control chemical use, minimize packaging waste, reduce the University’s carbon footprint, and lower the chances of chemical related injuries. The program has developed over the years by following best business practices to protect the campus community, reduce waste, and meet the cleanliness goals of the University. Concentrated ongoing efforts have resulted in better means and methods resulting in a more efficient custodial operation.
As sustainable cleaning products and processes have become more available and effective, Boston University has continued to expand the Sustainable Cleaning Program. Custodial Services enhanced its Sustainable Cleaning Program with a pilot that began with the opening of the Center for Student Services in September 2012. This successful program is now serving as a model as the University rolls the program out across the rest of the campus. The pilot has shown that a sustainable cleaning program can meet the stringent cleaning standards of the University with 100% of the products certified by Green Seal and EcoLogo, the highest standards available for sustainable cleaning products.
The Sustainable Cleaning Program aims to improve regional air quality and health, to reduce operating costs and increase water and energy savings through reduced material consumption and packaging waste, to reduce waterborne and solid waste by minimizing hazardous materials entering the waste stream, and to increase market support for recycled materials.
The program is designed to mesh with LEED and STARS rating systems and includes:
• Sustainable purchasing
• High-performance cleaning program
• Custodial effectiveness assessment
• Sustainable cleaning products and materials
• Sustainable cleaning equipment
• Indoor chemical pollutant and source control
• Hand hygiene
• Staff training
• Continuous improvement
