A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:

100% of our full and part time employees (8,840 in 2010) receive sustainable compensation. We employ temporary staff (mostly recent graduates for less than 12 months) as well. Many of these employees receive sustainable compensation, some don't. We could not access that data at the time of reporting, but will provide it for our 2011 report.

Per the City of Boston http://www.cityofboston.gov/jcs/liv_wage_ord.asp the current living wage is $13.10.
“The Living Wage Ordinance was passed by the Boston City Council and approved by the Mayor on September 4, 1998. The purpose of the Ordinance is to assure that employees of vendors who contract with the City to provide services earn an hourly wage that is sufficient for a family of four to live on or above the poverty line. The current Living Wage is $13.10 an hour and will stay in effect until June 30, 2012.”

Boston University meets the City of Boston standard for all employees. The University's current hourly minimum for our lowest grade (Grade 21) is $13.80.
