STARS reporting on Energy Use Intensity (EUI) illustrates the total gross energy and the total gross building area. Gross numbers miss the nuances in a broad spectrum of energy consumption from labs at one end to parking structures at the other end - especially on an urban campus. A more meaningful metric we suggest AASHE consider in the future would include the gross conditioned space.
