Sustainability Action Committee

The Sustainability Action Committee consists of faculty, staff and students who are interested in advancing sustainability on campus.  This group meets regularly to share ideas and discuss options for new sustainability initiatives and partnerships. Through these meetings, we collaborate to stay up to date on the current initiatives happening on campus. 

 

ASBSU Sustainability Committee

The ASBSU Sustainability Committee is dedicated to bringing the ideas of passionate students to life, creating opportunities for engagement, and empowering students to make sustainable changes in the Boise State community. In past years the committee has taken on a variety of initiatives on campus such as building cross-campus partnerships with entities such as the BroncoShop, lobbying senators and state legislators with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, creating a sustainability center in the SUB (in front of New Student Programs), and writing sustainable legislation to be communicated to campus leadership. They’ve also given out free menstrual cups to students and showcased sustainable artwork in the Sustainability Center.

Sustainability Director:  The Sustainability Director is a full-time position that works collaboratively with departments across campus to implement sustainability initiatives.    

 

Environmental Compliance and Sustainability Manager:  This position is 50% sustainability and 50% environmental compliance.  This position also work across campus to implement sustainability initiatives.

Boise State Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability is housed within Campus Operations and is responsible for promoting sustainability initiatives on campus.  The office employs one full-time Sustainability Director, one full-time Sustainability and Environmental Compliance Manager, with half of the position dedicated to sustainability, and several student employees.

Narrative outlining the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

 

  1. Adopted Sustainability Action Plan, 2022
  2. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Completion, 2024.  This was the first time the Office of Sustainability completed the inventory and the first inventory since 2018.  
  3. Recycling education campaign, 2024.  Our campus has experienced confusion around recycling and a lack of clear signage.  In conjunction with a plastics recycling change at the city level, we launched a recycling education campaign.  
  4. Launched Student Sustainability Fund.  This is an internal grant fund aimed at students.  Students can apply for up to $5000 to pay for a sustainability project.  
  5. Launched Green Revolving Fund.  This is an account $1 million to be used for sustainability-related projects that have a return on investment.  
  6. In the process of incorporating sustainability into the new Master Plan.  A new Master Plan is underway on campus, and sustainability is being incorporated into this plan.

Sustainability Director Overview

Purpose

The Sustainability Director oversees the Sustainability Office and helps integrate campus planning, projects, and operations with academic programs, student and faculty research, civic engagement initiatives, and community outreach.  The position is responsible for fostering a culture of sustainability on campus by identifying, coordinating and serving as a catalyst for units and individuals who are implementing sustainability programs; and engaging with executive campus leadership, principal officers, faculty, staff and students to foster sustainability broadly across campus units.

 

Level Scope

Oversees through subordinate managers a large, complex organization with multiple functional disciplines/occupations, OR manages a program, regardless of size, that has critical impact upon the campus. Significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, manages significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a very high degree of autonomy. Frequently influences business decisions made by senior leadership. Oversees through subordinate managers the accountability and stewardship of campus resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Negotiates and influences others to understand and accept new concepts, practices and approaches..

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 8 years experience including 5 years managerial experience.

60% of Time the Sustainability Director must:

  • Facilitates and manages the Campus Sustainability Plan and supports the campus to refine, track, and implement goals and benchmarks.Sustainability Plan, with a focus on zero waste, procurement, health/wellness, and campus planning activities.
  • Provides expertise, strategic guidance and support to operational units and academic divisions
  • Identifies opportunities for innovation and increased educational efforts that ensure the university is a mindful environmental steward.
  • Create centralized communication and promote successes. Create a central space for coordination of campus sustainability activities, educational initiatives, noteworthy campus achievements, reporting and national rankings.
  • Promote a culture of sustainability. Work to advance strategies for how to care for environmental spaces, human communities and advance sustainability initiatives across campus.
  • Integrate sustainability into the classroom. Build bridges between operations, teaching and research to establish Boise State as a living, learning laboratory in which students can learn and apply sustainability principles and techniques.
  • Supervises and mentors sustainability and environmental program support staff.
  • Oversees programming budget for materials, training, etc. related to campus sustainability
