11.1 Surplus and reuse programs

Does the institution have a surplus program through which institution-owned items that are no longer needed are stored for eventual sale, donation, or reuse?:
Yes

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the institution’s surplus program:

Boise State has a surplus program.  Items no longer needed by a department are taken to the Gage Warehouse, a storage facility off-campus.  Faculty and staff can "shop" at the Gage warehouse for used items, which can be reused by faculty and staff at no charge.  Items that are no longer needed anywhere on campus can be donated to non-profit organizations.

There is also an internal site for posting smaller office items no longer needed by a certain department.  This site is especially useful for small office supplies such as binders, folders, etc.

Leave Green

"Leave Green" is a program offered to students in partnership with Goodwill.  During move-out each semester, Goodwill leaves large containers near residence halls so students can easily donate items that are no longer needed.  Goodwill takes these items and sells them in their stores.

11.2 Single-use disposable plastics program

Boise State operates a compost facility that utilizes wind row composting methods.  Leaves, yard waste and fruits and vegetables are accepted.  


Does the institution have or participate in a reusable container program designed to reduce the use of single-use disposable plastic?:
Yes

Boise State dining services provides reusable to-go containers for students.  If students wish to take a meal to go from a dining hall, they can fill a reusable to-go container with food.  The dirty container is then returned to the dining hall and exchanged for a clean container.

Boise State's e-waste is processed through Pacific Recycling, an RIOS and R2 certified recycler.

Boise State collects old, used cell phones from students, faculty or staff in the Student Union Building.  The phones are sent to an electronics recycler.
