9.1 Inter-campus collaboration for sustainability

Does the institution participate in one or more sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s participation in sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions:

Boise State is part of the Sustainability Partnership of the Northern Rockies. This is a collaboration between universities situated around the Continental Divide that are dedicated to improving the quality of sustainability at each campus. This partnership meets every month to collaborate, mentor, and support programs as each member campus moves the dial to reduce the environmental impact of their university and enhance the experience of college students across the Rockies. We find working as a team dramatically improves the success of each campus.

Boise State is a member of AASHE, an organization focused on inspiring and catalyzing higher education to lead the global sustainability transformation. AASHE empowers higher education faculty, administrators, staff, and students to be effective change agents and drivers of sustainability innovation.

Boise State is also a member of Second Nature.

Narrative outlining how the institution formally shares its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions:

Mari Rice is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Internship Coordinator for the Environmental Studies Program at Boise State University. She also serves as the Experiential Learning Faculty for the School of Public Service and coordinates the campus tree project. Mari was a speaker at the 2024 Washington Oregon Cascadia Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC).  Below is the session description.

This case study session will showcase how Boise State University received national recognition as a Tree Campus Higher Education Institution and met campus sustainability goals in the process. The campus tree project started through an Environmental Studies service-learning course and has continued to grow into a collaborative partnership that engages students, faculty, staff, and multiple community partners. The project illustrates how college campuses can serve as living laboratories for students to address place-based environmental challenges, green the campus, and educate and involve the broader campus and surrounding community.
