5.1 Percentage of students that participate in civic engagement programs

Boise State has an extensive service-learning program. Service-learning is high-impact, hands-on learning where students apply academic knowledge and skills through real-world service experiences that benefit the community. Students reflect on the service activity to deepen their understanding of course content, gain a broader appreciation of the discipline, and foster active community engagement. Thirty percent of students participate in service learning courses.

The university offers other ways, besides coursework, to become civically engaged. Alternative spring break is an annual program where students choose to complete volunteer projects during spring break. During spring break of 2023, 13 students participated.
Additional local and regional service programs attract many more students. 1105 participants volunteered in these programs, offered through the Student Involvement and Leadership Center, in 2022.

Courses using Service-Learning are designated by the Registrar, and student participation data is collected and compared with total student enrollment each semester. 30% of students participate in service-learning courses.

One employee was part of the Citywide Advisory Committee to Lead the Rewrite of Zoning Code.
