8.2 Recognition of integrated, community-based, and extra-academic research
Description or text of the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that explicitly recognize integrated research:
Human Environment Systems T&P Guidelines (excerpt):
Knowledge generation and dissemination that have impacts outside the scientific community
are similarly highly valued. Valued broader societal impacts include, but are not limited to,
creating knowledge that guides management activities, enhances decision-making processes, or
brings value to the human-environment systems in which the research is conducted. Because
the translation of knowledge into action often requires developing strong relationships and
partnerships within human-environment systems communities, relationship-building activities
are valued. Evidence of society-facing research activities may include, but are not limited to,
reports, datasets, computer code, workshops, media coverage, meetings and presentations, or
other ways that time is spent to promote impact. Impact can be expressed in diverse ways that
may include, but are not limited to, changes in policy or procedures, evidence of improved
functionality of the studied human-environment system, evidence of the use or application of
knowledge generated, and expressions of benefit or value by stakeholders and community
partners.
Collaborative research activities are an essential element of the successful HES candidate. Of
note are activities that lead to innovative transdisciplinary perspectives in HES science. The
fostering of research collaborations is considered an impact in and of itself; the candidate
should document both their supporting and leadership roles in this area.

8.3 Inter-campus collaboration for responsible research and innovation
Description of the institution’s inter-campus collaborations for responsible research and innovation:
Boise State is a founding member of the Presidents and Chancellors Council on Public Impact Research.
University leaders are coming together, alongside counterparts from the funding community, to strengthen the contributions of the research ecosystem for the public good. The recently created Presidents and Chancellors Council on Public Impact Research, which meets for the first time this June, will partner with key stakeholders to develop and disseminate a roadmap for ensuring that such work reflects a new paradigm for research initiatives.
The council members, who will convene first at a leadership forum hosted by The Pew Charitable Trusts, will uplift and strengthen efforts to ensure that university research results in positive changes to people’s lives, communities, and society as a whole. Council members represent the diversity of North American research institutions, including public land-grant universities, private campuses, and urban-serving, rural-serving, and minority-serving universities. Over the next two years, Pew will work closely with participating campuses to coordinate the council’s collective actions.
