5.1 Sustainability literacy assessment design and administration

Sustainability Literacy Survey 

In the Spring of 2022 a survey was sent to a representative sample of sophomores and juniors. The survey was carried out by students doing their Master's of Public Administration capstone project.  The survey consisted of both multiple-choice and open responses. The questions can be found via the link below.

Description of the institution’s recent sustainability literacy assessment findings and any notable trends:

180 students responded to the survey.  This was the first survey conducted, so we cannot determine any trends over time.  19 questions were related to sustainability literacy.  

Notable findings:

102 respondents got at least 76% of the knowledge-based (sustainability literacy) questions correct.  

 

 

 

 

 


Were academic staff engaged in sustainability education at the institution involved in developing and/or adopting the methodologies used to assess sustainability literacy?:
Yes

Description of the process through which academic staff were involved in developing and/or adopting the methodologies used to assess sustainability literacy:

Academic Staff taught the students in the MPA course that conducted the survey.  The staff advised the students on the correct survey methodology and helped to edit the questions.  

 

 


Are the literacy assessments designed and administered in such a way that the results can be used to evaluate the success of the institution’s sustainability education initiatives?:

Percentage of students assessed for sustainability literacy, either directly or by representative sample:
25 to 49

Description of the process used to measure or estimate the percentage of students assessed for sustainability literacy:

A random, representative sample of sophomores and juniors was surveyed.  The sample was selected by Institutional Research. 180 students responded to the survey.
