Mission Statement
The mission of the Black Cultural Center is designed to provide services that facilitate a campus environment that is supportive of the needs of Black/African American peoples at Berea College. Through programming, co-curricular programs, leader development, intercultural/interracial understanding opportunities, academic excellence strategies and other experiences, the center provides services to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Black students. In addition, the Black Cultural Center seeks to serve as a leader in facilitating the college's mission of Interracial Understanding, in the spirit "God had made of One Blood all Peoples of the Earth".

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:

•Education and Experience required to ensure success in this position: Master’s Degree in Student Personnel or other relevant field. Doctorate preferred. Five or more year’s leadership responsibility in a college or university setting for sustained programming, leadership and service provision in multicultural and/or diversity affairs. Higher education teaching experience preferred.
•Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Ability to design and implement meaningful and high quality co-curricular programs for students. Deep understanding of diversity issues, especially those focused on race and interracial understanding. Administrative and organizational skills. Supervisory skill. Exemplary communication skills, both written and oral. Thorough familiarity with research and practice in diversity and multiculturalism, mediation, student retention and success. Ability to work collaboratively with varied constituents including students, faculty, staff colleagues, and communities beyond the campus. Abiding commitment to multicultural understanding.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
Design and administer programs and services of the Black Cultural Center, maintain Center budget, space, and resources and provide for high quality and current information about the Center, both print and electronic.

Direct the hiring, training, supervision, development and evaluation of Center staff (student and professional).

Provide support services and programming for African-American students including such things as orientation, peer counseling and mentoring, professional mentoring and referral, problem resolution, advocacy, leadership development, etc. and implement strategies for the retention of African-American students.

Advise relevant student organizations.

Sponsor, oversee and share responsibility for developing programs promoting cross-cultural dialogue and interaction relative to racial diversity, interracial understanding and cooperation, especially among students.

Organize and sponsor campus-wide programs that emphasize the distinct contributions and experiences of African-Americans, including Convocations and the Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month celebrations.

Promote coalition building among various campus and external programs, constituencies and individuals to create a hospitable environment and educational experience for African-American students, faculty and staff.

Assist other departments in initiatives focused on the recruitment and retention of African-American students, e.g., Admissions, Academic Services, Collegium, CELTS, etc.

Collaborate with, administer, or provide administrative support to selected outreach and service programs serving or focusing on African-Americans.

Assess the effectiveness of Center programs, activities, and collaborations.

As needed and possible, provide instruction in the academic program, e.g., GST 101, African and African-American Studies, Short Term, etc.

Participate in strategic and ongoing planning for the Division of Labor and Student Life and serve on College committees when elected or assigned.
