A brief description of the student group:
HEAL (Helping Earth and Learning) is a student-led environmental and social justice organization. We work for structural and personal change to create a just and sustainable world. We try to accomplish this through progressive campaigns, direct action, and educational opportunities in the Berea College community.
Students originally formed HEAL to provide a collaborative space for organizing campus events and initiating campaigns for social change. As part of Students for Appalachia (SFA), HEALconsists of four core-staff members and many volunteers. Each staff member facilitates one or more campaigns that are focused on change. These changes are meant to advance the practice of social justice and environmental sustainability within our community. HEAL accomplishes change thorough increasing student awareness, advocating College policy changes, or organizing studentaction. We encourage all students to challenge the local, national, and global power structures that violate human rights, encourage excessive consumerism, suppress expression, and degrade the environment. We attempt to not only challenge but also to transform through the creation of at least one proposal per semester.
