A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
- A complete course inventory of all graduate and undergraduate courses between Fall 2016 and Summer 2019 was provided by the Bentley University registrar. A list of classes in the reporting timeline (Fall 2018-Summer 2019) was filtered from this larger list.
- Bentley’s Sustainability Student Leadership team helped to classify these courses as sustainability focused or inclusive based on course descriptions. Their inventory was then reviewed by the Office of Sustainability staff.
- The online descriptions of each course in the inventory were reviewed and assessed. The descriptions were evaluated against the UN Sustainable Development Goals to determine courses containing content that supported student learning about sustainability challenges and possible solutions to these challenges.
- Based on AASHE definitions, courses were identified as being sustainability focused if the course had explicit learning outcomes and course materials that supported the learning of skills or information used to directly address a sustainability challenge outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A course was considered sustainability inclusive if a unit or component of the course addressed the sustainability challenges.
- Courses are counted individually by their course and section number, so if the same course and section was offered more than once during the reporting period, it is counted only once, despite how many times it’s offered. Different sections of the same course are counted individually because they are typically taught by different professors and have unique syllabi.
- A few courses have their department listed as General Business (GB). All Bentley students are required to take certain GB courses. These courses are taught multiple times per semester by professors in various departments. Therefore, the courses are included in the inventory, but a department is not specified.
- For the Graduate course inventory, PhD program courses are not included.
