Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Belmont Medicinal Garden

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Belmont University College of Pharmacy has created a Medicinal Garden outside of the McWhorter Building, which is home to the College of Pharmacy. The garden is cared for by students and faculty, and has become a model for other similar gardens in the community. There are over 30 different plants in the Medicinal Garden, some of which have been used to treat diseases for centuries, and others that are only now being used to treat conditions such as cancer. The garden supports the work of the college in teaching pharmacognosy, the study and use of medicinal drugs obtained from plants or other natural sources. This approach builds into the curriculum an appreciation for the rich diversity of plant life, and an awareness of the need to protect biodiversity.
