Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The Belmont Apiary

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Belmont Apiary is located on the 18,600-square-foot green roof (one of 14 at Belmont) atop Belmont’s Wedgewood Academic Center. 100,000 bees comprise the colonies that pollinate flowers within a mile of campus. The nearest other apiary is located over a mile from campus, so the bees at Belmont are a welcome addition to nearby neighborhoods, especially in light of the recent dramatic decline in bee populations nationwide. This decline has become a crisis, because a wide range of trees and plants require pollination to produce. In addition to the Belmont Apiary making a small but real contribution to addressing the die-off of bees, the honey from the hives is shared with faculty, staff and neighbors as a gift from the university to the wider community.
