A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
Barnard has been engaging with the Manhattan Borough President and local elected officials to integrate circular economy principles into the economic agenda of Manhattan. Together we are working to highlight existing Manhattan entities practicing circular economy solutions. In partnership with Borough President's Office and the Hebrew Free Loan Society, interest free loans are being offered to create new or expand existing circular businesses. On March 10, 2023, Barnard College, the Columbia Climate School, and Manhattan Borough President, Mark Levine, hosted the inaugural Circularity Day NYC. The day was be one of learning, uplifting, and making connections all about the power of Circularity. Our Sustainability leaders have also advocated for circular practices and policies in the form of city legislation.

In the summer of 2020, the College joined an amicus brief with 58 other institutions of Higher Education supporting Harvard and MIT’s lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when they announced restrictions on F-1 visa-holding international students, specifically calling into question their ability to take classes remotely and continue their academic and employment pursuits in the United States.The College also sent letters to representatives in Congress regarding this issue and signed on to letters to Congress spearheaded by the American Council of Education (ACE) and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU).
In August, 2022 Barnard joined 32 peer colleges and universities in support of Harvard University and the University of North Carolina by filing an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold four decades of precedent and affirm the consideration of race and ethnicity in college admission decisions.
