A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
We have hired a company who has taken the Electronic Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship (signed pledge posted here: http://inside.bard.edu/berd/hazmat_policies.shtml). The company handles all our light bulbs, computers, TVs, misc. 'plug ins' and batteries. Our policy is that no mercury containing light bulbs may be thrown in the trash, nor may computers and peripherals, including TVs. We recycle all batteries and have collection points around campus.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
Bard's policy is to not throw out any materials that plug in unless approved through the BERD office. By default, materials go to our Universal Waste Collection area for sorting and proper disposal, overseen by the BERD office.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :
All students living on campus have access to our Universal Waste recycling program. They are required to put computer and related equipment destined for disposal at their nearest recycling station with a sign that says "Universal Waste - (material type)". BERPs (student volunteers in each dorm) are collection points for all mercury containing bulbs and all batteries). They periodically turn in the bulbs at BERP meetings or to the BERD office.
