A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

In 2010, Bard constructed a new water filtration plant. In accordance with the Green Innovation Grant Program, Bard’s project meets “the objectives of environmentally and economically sustainable facilities by exceeding traditional infrastructure goals associated with basic regulatory requirements for water quality protection.” The project features elements that pertain to the program’s categories of water efficiency, energy efficiency, and environmental innovation. The centerpiece of the new facility is an innovative microfiltration system called the ARIA AP-4 from Pall Corporation, whose design, engineering, and manufacturing operations are based in Cortland, New York. Pall Microfiltration systems have been used around the country and in New York State at locations such as the ALCOA plant in Massena and at four other sites in New York. One of the most significant benefits of the microfiltration process is a reduction in the amount of source water used to produce clean water. Moreover, these systems have been proven to be able to purify water to such a degree that it exceeds all New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Federal Environmental Protection Agency standards and is designed to exceed these standards as far as officials from these agencies can project.
