A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:

The University Senate structure includes a main senate body, known as University Senate, and 3 standing councils. The three councils are (1) Faculty Council, which represents the academic staff participation by having a representative from each academic department; (2) Professional Personnel Council, which represents the non-academic staff participation by having elected representative from each non-academic unit within the university; and (3) Student Government Association (SGA), which represents the students participation. Each of these three (3) councils manages and deliberate about issues related to the represented constituents of the council. Upon approval of any business item at any of the councils, it is brought to the University Senate for announcement or as a business item for discussion. The University Senate includes the chairs of the aforementioned 3 councils as well as membership from all of them.

Geoffrey Mearns, Ball State University Presidents, Co-Chairs the “Next Muncie” with Jeff Bird, President, IU Health East Central Region. The group meets frequently to strategically plan and address issues related to transforming Muncie economically, socially, and create better chances for integration. These meeting and initiatives taken by Next Muncie allow the community to have a voice in Ball State University and the institution to have a voice in the future of Muncie. In addition, the institution carries out a community partner survey every year, as well as hold focus groups related to existing and new initiatives, as well as the over all climate of the institution and Muncie. These are held by office of community engagement.
Other external research stakeholders who might be associated with issues about institutional governance come under the supervision of the Government Relations and Community Outreach.
