• Recycling Responsibilities
At Facilities Planning & Management we contribute to meeting our campus waste reduction goals by participating in a traditional waste recycling program like the Muncie Sanitary Blue Bag system. Recycle bins are located throughout the academic buildings and miscellaneous houses. By recycling items such as glass, plastics, metal and paper that would otherwise become landfill waste we generate new materials and products and it benefits our environment. We use blue bags for recyclable materials only - aluminum and steel cans, glass containers, plastic jugs and bottles, newspapers, magazines, books, etc. We use black bags for landfill waste. All trash bags are taken to exterior building dumpsters, one for blue bag recycle materials and one for black bag landfill waste.
• Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
In addition we participate in a lighting initiative by replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in doing so we save money and reduce the release of CO2 into the environment. When a fluorescent bulb burns out and needs changed we keep the old bulb and once we have collected a case of bulbs we seal and label the box to be picked up for recycling. LED’s (Light Emitting Diode) are used throughout campus, while they are more expensive and require more precise current than the incandescent or CFL they are considerably smaller in size, have a longer lifetime and have far less environmental concerns when it is time for disposal.
• Water Conservation
Our Falcon Waterfree urinal system is at the forefront of waterless technology. Its gravity fed design moves urine through the system without using or wasting any water, thereby saving 100% of the energy associated with traditional flush urinals. It also saves money by eliminating the rising costs associated with water and sewage rates. The only maintenance steps required for normal use are a routine spray-and-wipe cleaning of the fixture and an easy cartridge change about two or three times per year, depending on usage.
• Chemical Dilution System
Wayne® Dilution System is a Waste Not Manufacturing Concentrate System and must be diluted with water before use. To eliminate waste and insure economy and safe handling, the use of a controlled dispensing system is required. A complete selection of proportioning devices, dispenser cubes and secondary labels are available through the Wayne representative. The system is best described as Industrial Strength, Fast and Easy-to-Use, Economical; ratios vary from 1 ounce per gallon dilution (128-1) to (32-1) and located in custodian mop closets.
• Microfiber Technology
Microfiber Technology is proven to reduce time and energy on certain tasks, it is environmentally friendly and when cared for properly it outlasts the standard mops and rags. The microfibers are split, microscopic hooks that weigh less, absorb more, rinse better and provide less stress on the user. The split bucket system reduces water consumption by over ½ compared to the tradition one bucket cotton fiber mop system. We use microfiber dust mops, wet mops and rags and launder them in-house.
• Stone Floor Protection System
We use a combination of the 3-M Stone Floor Protection System and Wayne diamond cutting system to ensure a complete floor care process that restores the natural beauty of porous stone that produces a remarkable, long-lasting shine. The system is easy to use, environmentally friendly, uses components for greener cleaning, needs no stripping or deep scrubbing, and creates a high traction gloss that
by mechanically polishing the floor; this eliminates the need for stripping and waxing. Since we have implemented the stone floor protection system we have reduced our use of floor stripper (caustic chemical) by 2/3 and wax by over 1/2.
• Purchasing
End-of-Life Management (EOL) – When purchasing cleaning equipment we look at sustainability & EOL, when possible we purchase equipment made from recycled materials and once a product has come to the end of its useful life we want to reduce environmental impacts by having parts repurposed or recycled.
Green Cleaning our Routine – When possible we look for Green Seal Certified cleaning products, new products are routinely tested. We look for non-toxic, biodegradable products made from renewable sources. Traditional petroleum products have a negative impact on the environment and cannot be disposed of through a drain or landfill, Ball State is part of the White River watershed and storm drains flow into the river which eventually make their way to the Gulf of Mexico. Waste cannot be dumped into the storm drains. Hazardous and chemical waste pick up is scheduled through the BSU Environmental Health & Safety Department.
