Cardinal Scholar, Ball State University’s open access institutional repository, is managed and locally hosted by Ball State University Libraries using the DSpace open source repository management software. The repository serves as the primary public access point for electronic thesis and dissertations created by Ball State University students and currently includes over 10,000 such works. In addition, the repository hosts open access faculty, student, and staff research and University records and publications. Faculty, students, and staff may upload scholarly works directly through the repository platform. Ball State University’s Office of Digital Research and Publishing actively solicits contributions to the repository and educates the campus community regarding the benefits of open access through consultative services, programming, and outreach campaigns.

The Reprint / Publication Support Program offered by the Sponsored Projects Administration’s Aspire Program specifically assists with funding article processing charges. The Aspire Program provides support for expenses associated with publication, reprints, article processing or open access charges, and page charges. Work must have been accepted for publication or published in a refereed or other scholarly journal. Support can be used for open access, peer-reviewed publications listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals or for publication in-subscription journals that allow some articles to become available openly based on a published fee schedule (sometimes known as hybrid open access).

A brief description of the open access journal hosting services:

Through the Office of Digital Research and Publishing, Ball State University Libraries operates an instance of Open Journal Systems, an open source open access journal publishing software platform that is hosted for us through the Public Knowledge Project. We are currently working with student and faculty editors/editor groups on the Ball State University campus to publish 7 peer-reviewed academic journals in an open access environment. The University Libraries provides publication management and guidance consultative services, journal formatting services, metadata creation services, and publishing services to advance the publishing of open access journals using Open Journal Systems. University Libraries assumes all costs related to the hosting of these 7 titles. The Libraries is actively seeking to expand this program and publish other titles edited by Ball State University scholars.
