The university has a standing University Diversity Committee and maintains a staffed office of institutional diversity which oversees the breadth of campus-wide initiatives and programs related to diversity and equity on campus.
The Assistant Provost for Diversity is also the Director of the Office of Institutional Diversity and serves as the diversity and equity coordinator.
Selection to the University Diversity Committee:
By August 31 each year, the Provost selects new faculty members for the committee and/or re-appoints faculty members whose three-year terms are expiring. The Provost is also responsible for selecting members to fill vacancies for the balance of incomplete terms.
People who are chosen to serve on the committee may be of the Provost’s own choosing, a recommendation to the Provost from a member of the Ball State community, or self-nomination by an interested faculty member. An effort is always made to have representation from every college.
Officers
1. Chair of the University Diversity Committee
The Provost will appoint the Chair and Assistant Chair of the University Diversity Committee for approval by the Board of Trustees.
The responsibility of the chair is to preside over Diversity Committee meetings, coordinate the work of the committee, and supervise production of the annual report.
2. Assistant Chair of the University Diversity Committee
By July 1 of each year, the committee may nominate an Assistant Chair of the University Diversity Committee for the following academic year.
After approval by the Board of Trustees, the Assistant Chair will begin service with a one-year term as Assistant Chair and Secretary of the committee. At the end of this first year, pending approval of the Provost and the Board of Trustees, the person will advance to the position as Chair of the Diversity Committee and serve a one-year term. The chair will continue the third year in the position of immediate Past Chair of the Diversity Committee.
Individuals appointed to the Assistant Chair position must commit to a 3 year term of service on the Executive Committee. This means that their term as committee member may have to be extended if they are not selected as assistant chair when initially appointed to the committee

Whereas other initiatives focus on particular aspects of diversity, our equal opportunity and affirmative action policies use a broad definition of diversity referring to race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, national origin, ancestry, age, and citizenship.
The Office of Institutional Diversity is not only committed to diversity programming for students; it also supports several faculty development programs as well. The Diversity Associates Program, the Developing Pedagogies to Enhance Excellence Seminar, and the Diversity Seminars are three programs that encourage faculty to explore the relevance of diversity in all classes.

A brief description of the diversity coordinator's position:
Position Function:
Oversees diversity related mission, activities, and plans for the university. Engages in short and long-range planning and programming for faculty, students, and staff. Represents Academic Affairs in university-wide diversity matters. Acts as the OID's fiscal agent for expanding, revising, and developing programs; serves as university spokesperson for diversity to both internal and external audiences.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Provide guidance and assistance in the implementation of Strategic Plan items that relate to diversity.
2. Serve as the spokesperson to internal and external audiences on diversity-related initiatives.
3. Create, organize, and execute diversity training sessions for university personnel, especially faculty.
4. Serve on and provide guidance to the Counsel of Deans on diversity recruitment, hiring, and retention matters, especially as related to faculty.
5. Assist Deans, Department Chairs, and faculty with diversity related activities and funding for same.
6. Lead the selection of Diversity Associates, and maintain curriculum and funding records.
7. Select topics for, and recruit leaders for Diversity Seminars and workshops throughout the academic year.
8. Plan and implement new programs relating to diversity.
9. Advise various campus entities on climate issues for faculty and students. Leads the efforts to improve campus climate for minority populations.
10. Work with other units to promote diversity.
11. Assist the Graduate School with minority recruitment.
12. Manage the OID web site, including relevant information from external sources.
13. Serve as ex officio member to the University Diversity Committee.
14. Coordinate diversity- related activities with the Multicultural Center, such as MLK, Jr. Lecture and concert and the Celebration of Excellence.
15. Manage the GLBT foundation account.
16. Establish and lead a committee for the selection of the Marshall Scholarship.
17. Provide diversity-related information and resources upon request.
18. Regularly meet with the Provost.
19. Perform other related duties as assigned.
