A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
The University Campus Master Plan incorporates the following sustainability elements:
•Anchored-placement (at the north and south ends of campus) of the majority of on-campus parking to encourage use of the hybrid-electric campus bus shuttle system and to minimize on-campus vehicle use by faculty, staff and students;
•Placement of bike racks at every building and bike garages at every residence hall complex;
•Commitment to reforestation of the full campus;
•Use of storm-water management features (duck ponds) throughout campus to control run-off and provide species habitats;
•Labeling of all storm water drains connected directly to the regional watershed to minimize potential for inadvertent pollution of that watershed system;
•Elimination of on-campus smoking;
•Preservation of Christy Woods – a natural stand of native vegetation adjacent to the old quadrangle area of campus;
•Use of a campus-wide Geothermal Heat-Pump District Heating and Cooling system to eliminate on-campus coal combustion and the associated 85,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.
