A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
Baldwin Wallace offered the first undergraduate major in Sustainability in the Midwest beginning in 2008. Our major offers students choice among four tracks including (1) Business (2) Science, (3) Quantitative, and (4) Social Science/Humanities. Each track has a corresponding list of course requirements that are appropriate to the track. The non-science tracks have a 53.5 credit hour requirement for completion and the science track has a 58 credit hour requirement for completion. All four tracks culminate in a BA. Each track offers students a host of courses to choose from which are generally taught by a closely knit cadre of sustainability faculty on campus. Many of the courses were developed with significant grant funding from the McGregor Foundation that allowed faculty to develop courses related to their fields and expertise meeting together in the summer in faculty development workshops.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
In addition to the above Sustainability major tracks, Baldwin Wallace also now offers an Environmental Science major to students. This is a new development that just launched in the 2017-2018 academic year. The intent is to provide interested students with a targeted, heavily science based major in the field of environmental studies. Specifically, the curriculum includes a strong foundation in biology, chemistry and geology leading to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a 64.5 credit hour requirement. It is rich in theoretical and empirical studies. Students learn investigative methods of gathering important scientific data that can be analyzed, synthesized and applied to real-world situations. As another point of comparison, Sustainability focuses on reducing negative human impact on the environment. Environmental science is dedicated to the scientific study of the environment that includes examining the relationship between humans and the environment, and finding effective ways to address challenges both now and in the future.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
A comprehensive, rigorous program, Biology is offered as a major and minor. Related programs include neuroscience and primary healthcare advancement program. Through coursework, research, field studies and more, students gain a strong, broad- based foundation in the principles of biology. The biology major prepares students to: 1. Students will be able to think critically and evaluate the merit of scientific information. 2. Students will be able to assemble information and communicate it effectively, both orally and in writing. 3. Students will be able to understand ecological principles and their relevance to sustainable human societies. 4. Students will be able to understand the molecular composition, structure, and physiological processes of cells. 5. Students will be able to understand the mechanism of inheritance and its role in maintaining organismal integrity and variability. 6. Students will be able to use quantitative skills in the design, implementation, and interpretation of experiments. Research opportunities include pollination ecology, molecular control of animal development, human cadaver dissection, cultured neurons and population genetics. Among its amenities are an insect room, greenhouse, zebrafish aquaria, plant growth chambers, and outdoor native plant and rain gardens. BW also has fluorescent microscopes, thermocyclers, microinjectors and electrophoresis equipment to support a variety of research approaches. At BW, biology students can gain graduate school experiences at the undergraduate level. In the gross anatomy lab, students can examine a cadaver while their professor looks on. Midway into the lesson, they can view magnified images of an abdominal cavity being displayed on multiple large projection screens positioned within the room. Ceiling-mounted cameras capture every move. An overhead surgical light illuminates the subject, adding to the feeling of being in an operating room of a teaching hospital.

I. Public Health: Offered as a major, Public Health focuses on disease investigation and prevention, health promotion and program management. It is a career- and graduate school-preparative program that includes interdisciplinary coursework and enriching hands-on experiences working with diverse communities and health care organizations. The public health major prepares students to: 1. Have a social-ecological perspective of health a. The social-ecological perspective is a way to conceptualize health through multiple levels from the individual (biology, psychology, etc.) to their society (institutions, culture, etc.). b. BS students are expected to understand the social-ecological perspective and use when discussing health issues 2. Effective written and oral communication a. It is important for students to be able to take public health information and research and synthesize it for consumption and usability for many different populations (scientific, political, neighborhood, etc.). b. BS students are expected to be able to write and speak effectively. 3. Utilizing research methodologies for public health purposes a. Public health requires that its activities utilize scientific evidence when implementing any activity. b. BS students are expected understand the need for scientific evidence for public health activities. 4. Working effectively with diverse individuals and communities. a. Public health students need to understand and describe how various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds can affect people’s lives and health. b. BS students are expected to understand how diverse experiences can affect people’s lives 5. Public Health Leadership a. The common core of all the programs in BW's computer science department includes programming and problem solving, as well as exposure to the mathematics, computer architecture, paradigms and the theory that underlie the computing discipline.
