Babson has 3 pillars of Sustainability efforts: Community Engagement, Education Intergration and Infrastructure / Campus Stewardship. The Director of Susainability and Campus Utilization coordinates these efforts and specifically is responsible for the Infrastructure/Campus Stewardship pillar. An Associate Director is responsible for student programming including the faciltiation of our Student Intern program. In addition to Director and Associate Director, there is a faculty appointment dedicated to Academic Integrated Sustainability at Babson. 

In addition to these offices and appointments, Babson has two student led Sustainability Clubs, one for undergraduates and one for graduate students. Employees run a Sustainability ERG (Employee Resource Group).

At Babson College, our mission is to prepare and empower entrepreneurial leaders who create, grow, and steward sustainable economic and social value. To achieve this, our sustainability strategy is designed to integrate sustainability principles into every aspect of our institution, aligning with our mission and core values.

Three Pillars of Sustainability at Babson

1.     Community Engagement:

o   Incorporate sustainability into the student experience by offering courses, workshops, and experiential learning opportunities that focus on sustainable business practices, social entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship.

o   Foster the Sustainability Leadership Program for students interested in driving positive change through entrepreneurial leadership in sustainability.

o   Foster a culture of sustainability on campus through community member led initiatives, clubs, and events that promote environmental awareness, sustainable living, and responsible consumption.

o   Provide resources and support for student-led sustainability projects, startups, and initiatives, encouraging innovation and creativity in addressing sustainability challenges.

2.     Infrastructure / Campus Stewardship:

o   Implement sustainable practices across campus infrastructure, including energy efficiency upgrades, waste reduction initiatives, and sustainable building designs for new construction and renovations.

o   Develop a campus-wide sustainability plan with measurable goals and targets for reducing carbon emissions, water consumption, and waste generation.

o   Review options in renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and decrease our environmental footprint.

o   Promote sustainable transportation options for students, faculty, and staff, such as bike-sharing programs, electric vehicle charging stations, and public transit incentives.

3.     Education Integration:

o   Integrate sustainability into the curriculum across all academic disciplines, ensuring that students graduate with a deep understanding of sustainable business practices, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

o   Develop new courses and interdisciplinary programs focused on sustainable entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, and sustainable supply chain management.

o   Assist faculty with resources and support for integrating sustainability into their courses, including training workshops, curriculum development grants, and access to sustainability research and best practices.

o   Collaborate with industry partners to develop case studies, internships, and research projects that address real-world sustainability challenges and opportunities.

Our sustainability strategy reinforces our organizational culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility, empowering students to become change agents in their communities and beyond.

By focusing on sustainable infrastructure and practices, we can optimize resource use and reduce operational costs, supporting our current and planned enrollment growth while minimizing our environmental impact.

Through strategic partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies, we will scale our impact and enhance our value proposition as a leader in sustainable entrepreneurship education, driving positive change on a global scale.

By implementing this comprehensive sustainability strategy, Babson College will fulfill its mission of preparing entrepreneurial leaders and contribute to building a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

Text of the job description for the institution’s sustainability officer (1st position):

The Director, Sustainability & Campus Utilization is focused on optimizing the College’s physical footprint, while also focusing on achieving critical sustainability gains and outcomes, with a target of demonstrably reducing the College’s carbon footprint. The role is primarily internally facing, interacting with a broad set of departments (i.e., facilities, construction, IT, College Leadership, etc.) and specific external stakeholders, partners, and providers as needed. Specific responsibilities include overseeing and managing initiatives related to sustainability and the efficient use of campus resources; promoting environmental responsibility, resource efficiency, and a sustainable campus environment; collaborating with diverse stakeholders to create a comprehensive and effective sustainability strategy for the College; leading strategic planning in the major areas of campus utilization; defining new relationships of mutual interest and value, revenue generation and creating and maintaining existing collaborations that further the college’s mission; and working closely with the Associate Vice President, to strategically position and align the department to achieve tangible gains in supporting the College’s mission.

 

Develop and implement sustainability strategies, policies, and programs for the campus that deliver sustainability results, as well as raise awareness and move to action.

Identify and prioritize internal and external distinct opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of campus operations.

Conduct periodic reviews and report on current, proposed, and planned sustainability programs and their benefits.

Collaborate with various departments to integrate sustainability principles into daily campus activities.

Implement energy-efficient practices and technologies to reduce the campus's carbon footprint; oversee energy audits and recommend improvements to enhance energy efficiency.

Manages sustainability-related feasibility studies pertaining to the College.

Develop, propose and manage budgets for sustainability initiatives and projects; identify and pursue grant opportunities to support sustainability efforts.

As the senior leader responsible for campus utilization, define the vision of a post pandemic academic environment at the College, and develop a disciplined process to the new normal; re-case the current business model into a 12-month enterprise.

Develop partnership strategies with external stakeholders and create new ideas and collaborations.

Work with the senior leadership and various internal groups to identify and promote strategic campus relationships that align to the college’s goals.

Oversee campus office space and designs methods to improve assessment and utilization of space including working with administrative departments/units on office space; collaborating with Facilities Department; developing new office standards and policies; and ensuring office assignment requests and determinations are conducted utilizing an objective, efficient, transparent process.

Working with the Associate Vice President, develop comprehensive strategic plans for the department that are aligned with organizational objectives, leveraging market insights and internal resources.

Execute strategic initiatives by convening, collaborating, and communicating with cross-functional teams, ensuring alignment with timelines and resource allocation.

Generate regular reports and presentations for senior leadership, providing insights into the status of strategic initiatives and performance metrics for Sustainability and Campus Utilization.  Working with the Associate Vice President, develop concise and compelling content related to the department for many channels, including Board of Trustee Presentations.
