A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:

The Office of Sustainability conducts a variety of outreach efforts through its student intern program and its employee Peers Network program. Typical yearly efforts tied to energy conservation include social media messaging, Earth Month activities, office strategy checklists, posters, and messages shared through tabling at events around campus. The office also features energy management information on its new employee education material and on its website for both Living at AU and Working at AU. In addition, Utilities & Energy hosts tours for students, faculty, and staff of the District Energy Plant where we share our energy reduction goals and tour one of our central hot water and chilled water plants.

A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:

Our university construction standards require all new buildings to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver. In addition, all new buildings constructed on the main campus are connected to the campus building automation system.

A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:

The new campus standard is for all external lights to be LED and new buildings are being designed to include LED technologies. In addition, some retrofit projects have taken place in and outside of buildings on campus. In addition, the state of Alabama has adopted ASHRAE 90.1 2013 (required to be followed by the University for new construction) which requires daylight dimming lighting controls.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:

There is a geothermal system installed and in operation at the Soccer & Track Facility. This is a 27,145 sq ft building. The geothermal loop is utilized to support heating and cooling for 22 water source heat pumps.

A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution:

NA

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

The discrepancy between the square footage figures and those reported in PRE-4: Operational Characteristics stems from how the Utilities & Energy Department of Facilities Management counts space that is managed by their department. They subtract from the total campus square footage figures open-air spaces (athletics fields, barns, unenclosed shelters, etc) from the total, as those spaces aren't conditioned.
