Located in the heart of campus, Lupton Hall is the central operating mechanism for multiple organizations and programs centered around food security initiatives. This is the permanent place of residence for the Auburn Cares Campus Food Pantry and the Campus Kitchen at Auburn University, while also serving as a resource center for many programs related to student basic needs wellness. Auburn Cares Campus Food Pantry is an initiative that works to provide students a resource on campus where they can receive weekly amounts of nonperishable goods. The Campus Kitchen at Auburn University is a registered 501c-3 nonprofit that works to reduce on campus food waste through securing unserved foods from the dining halls and repurposing them into nutritiously sound meals for dissemination to the students and surrounding Auburn/Opelika community
In total, the Nutrition Resource Center will be a pivotal piece in the movement towards a more socially aware campus at the university. Auburn University has long-standing programs that continuously work to ensure students have all the resources they can for a safe experience while at the university, but many of these programs have worked in their own silos. The Nutrition Resource Center serves to facilitate collaboration between these programs, in providing a space central to campus for information dissemination while elevating the work that each program engages with daily.
Not only is this space providing resources and information about food security, but basic needs security. In collaboration with various programs and offices around Auburn’s campus, the Nutrition Resource Center works to provide information and access to resources such as financial aid, veteran’s affairs, nutrition and dietetics, and student counseling for each student to utilize at their discretion. The Nutrition Resource Center is a program oriented at supporting each Auburn student during their time at the university and reducing stigma through active engagement with the student body. We cannot wait for this space to be operational in the coming months to plant a flag on Auburn’s campus for the mission of a food secure and aware university.
