Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
2023 Appalachian Energy Summit

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The 2023 Appalachian Energy Summit was the 11th annual gathering of some of the world’s best minds in energy policy and practice. This unique three-day event, held in Boone each year, brought together energy, sustainability, and academic communities of the state and region to share knowledge, innovation, and best practices.

The keynote theme for 2023 was “Exploration at the Extremes” with speakers Dr. Jill Tiefenthaler, National Geographic Society CEO, and Appalachian State University professor Dr. Baker Perry. They spotlighted immersive expeditions and one-of-a-kind storytelling from the roof of the world to the depths of the ocean.

The Summit offered solution-oriented content to help attendees make measurable progress with their clean energy, energy efficiency, climate action and sustainability goals. In concurrent sessions, a variety of working groups focused on campus-based sustainability practices and programs. Plenary session topics presented by industry, campus, and governmental speakers included:
-women in clean energy and sustainability,
-NC Clean Energy Fund and Energy Office updates, and
- industry solutions that included decarbonization, microgrids, and P3 innovations.

Bringing together a diverse group of individuals and organizations to share ideas and advance energy saving initiatives saves the UNC system billions of dollars (expectation of $2 billion by 2025) and enriches student learning via networking opportunities with “some of the most innovative minds in the industry,” according to Chancellor Sheri Everts.
