The multi-stakeholder Sustainable Investment Committee provides a university structure for fostering dialogue on investment decisions that promote sustainability. As a recommending body, this committee will assist in facilitating an investment strategy that aligns with the University's core values regarding the commitment to the principles of sustainability, while maintaining efficient and effective resource utilization.

This committee meets quarterly and is in the process of designing a carve-out sustainability/ESG fund.
This committee is also working with the Intentional Endowments Network and the Crane Institute to host an educational gathering of UNC system fund managers scheduled during the 2018 Appalachian Energy Summit.

In the Fall of 2012 a group of Appalachian student formed a student group called Fossil Free App State. Their stated mission is "We want Appalachian State University's Presidents and Board to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil fuel companies, and divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years."
