From the Bylaws of the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University:
Section 1.5.2
The terms “Board of Trustees” and “Board” shall mean the Board of Trust of Appalachian State University, composed of 13 persons pursuant to the North Carolina General Statues, section 116-31(d) as follows:
1. Eight elected by the Board of Governors;
2. Four appointed by the General Assembly, two of whom shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and two of whom shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and
3. The president of the student government, ex officio.

The Student Government Association is a group of passionate individuals that serve Appalachian State University. Their aim is to be the student voice and the student change on campus. They are an organization that exists for the good of this school, and they invite anyone to participate. Students may participate by completing a petition form with 25 student constituent signatures and request a seat on the Senate. The SGA office encourages students to come and share ideas representatives or to get more involved.

The purpose of the Faculty Senate is to serve as the instrument through which the faculty of Appalachian State University considers and acts on university matters. To this end, the Faculty Senate participates in the formation, implementation, and review of university policy.

The Faculty Senate shall consist of one member from each academic department, school, the library, and five at-large representatives. Any unit may choose not to fill its senate seat, in which case the seat will remain empty for that academic year. No Senator may serve more than two full terms consecutively. The normally designated term of office for Faculty Senate members is three years. Terms of members will be staggered so that one-third of the Senate are elected each year.

Section 2.8 Constituency Representatives – Constituency representatives shall be invited to attend each Board meeting and advise the Board on matters of business before the Board that affect or are of interest to their respective constituencies when the Board is convened in open session.

A brief description of the bodies and mechanisms through which external stakeholders are engaged in institutional governance (including information about each stakeholder group selected above):

Reporting directly to the chancellor the Director of External Affairs and Community Relations' primary responsibility is fostering, supporting and expanding the university’s relationships with state, regional and local governmental and non-governmental organizations in order to strengthen the university and its ability to deliver educational, service and research programs in support of its mission.

Local government and or educational organizations are represented by Steve Wyatt who is the Henderson County Manager and member of the Board of Visitors.

Private sector organizations are represented by numerous members of both the board of visitors and the board of trustees

The Appalachian State University Board of Trustees is a thirteen-member body that promotes the development of the institution within the functions prescribed by the UNC Board of Governors. The Board serves as advisor to the Board of Governors on matters pertaining to the University and also serves as advisor to the Chancellor concerning the management and development of Appalachian. The powers and duties of the Board of Trustees are primarily defined and delegated by the Board of Governors.

Individuals are appointed to four-year terms by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the UNC Board of Governors. Included as a voting member of the Board is the President of Appalachian's Student Government Association. The President of Appalachian's Alumni Council, and Chairs of the Faculty Senate and Staff Senate serve as ex officio constituency representatives to the Board.

Local government and/or educational organizations are represented by Appalachian State University Board of Trustee Member Steve Wyatt, Henderson County Manager.

Private sector organizations are represented by several people on both the Board of Visitors and the Board of Trustees. One example is Scott Lampe, vice president and chief financial officer of Hendrick Motorsports who sits on the Appalachian State University Board of Trustees.
