For Zero waste and/or carbon neutral athletic events:
A sustainable food and beverage purchasing program that includes athletic event vendors and concessions:
Community engagement efforts, e.g. to educate students and fans/supporters about the institution’s sustainability initiatives:
The Office of Sustainability, in partnership with Athletics, Physical Plant, and Food Services, has developed an extensive zero waste stadium commitment through purchasing policies that support sustainable food and beverage purchasing, and require vendors to supply compostable and recyclable food service ware for all stadium events. There has been compost and recycling collections set-up throughout the stadium, athletics center and tailgate lots, as well as on-going marketing and communications targeting zero waste and sustainability education. In addition, the Office of Sustainability employs a team of 20 student Sustainability Ambassadors to assist with the logistics and promotion of this program. We are now expanding to other athletic venues as well.
A program to minimize the use of potable water and chemicals in turf maintenance and grounds keeping: Our main athletic field is artificial (Field) turf and requires no irrigation nor traditional turf maintenance. https://physicalplant.appstate.edu/services/landscape-services
