Sustainable Fellowship Position

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

The Office of Sustainability at Appalachian State has created a fellowship position for a faculty member who is chosen through nomination. The faculty fellow acts as a branch out outreach and point of communication between the campus community, departments, students, and the office of sustainability. The fellow is involved in planning, coordinating, and participating in programs through the office of sustainability. The position will help the faculty member act as a catalyst and advocate of sustainability for their department and the greater campus.


A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):

This position was created in Fall 2014, with our first academic fellow, Dr. Tammy Kowalczyk (Accounting), was seeded into the postion January 2015. Measurable accomplishments of this position will be measured annually at the end of each year.

Recruiting Faculty from each college to participate on the sustainability council.

An employee development workshop focused on sustainbility is has been by the office of sustainbaility and the ASU Hubbard Center. This workshop will be administered by an interdiciplinary panel of faculty and staff and is chaired by the sustainability fellow. The sustainbility fellow will be responsible for coordinating and implementation of this workshop. Goals include increasing sustainability literacy amoungst faculty and staff.
