Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Solar Sheep
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Since 2015, Antioch has brought sheep to campus to live in a distinctly different location – the five-acre Antioch solar farm. The small “self-fertilizing lawnmowers” live within the fenced-in solar array eating the grass in between the numerous solar panels and potentially sheltering underneath the panels. Antioch students and staff help to manage the sheep, and students who work on the farm—either on co-op or as volunteers—give them fresh water and organic grain each morning. The College experiences many benefits from the solar sheep - reductions in fossil fuel emissions from mowing, fertilization around the panels, and educational opportunities regarding farm animal care -- before the sheep eventually make their way to the dining halls for consumption.
