Number of weeks of paid maternity leave:
12

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the maternity leave options available to employees:

Academic staff

Faculty and instructional staff (such as lecturers, coaches) tend to receive parental leave by semester, 26 weeks at full pay.

Non-academic staff

In 2018, Massachusetts signed into law a statute that provides paid family and medical leave (PFML) benefits to all employees. The PFML benefits provide all eligible employees 12 weeks of paid family leave.

At this writing, there are 1,150 regular employees and 268 casual employees who are eligible for paid family leave at Amherst College.

Assuming all academic staff (~25%) and all non-academic staff (~75%) qualify, the average employee has: 24(.25) + 12(.75) = 15 weeks, but we will report as 12 since that is the minimum for any employee.

Typically, an employee giving birth will take 18 weeks of leave, partially or fully paid as described.

Typically, an employee who is a new parent, but not giving birth, will take 12 weeks of leave, partially or fully paid as described.

Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the institution’s eligibility criteria for paid family/medical leave:

Faculty and instructional staff (such as lecturers, coaches) tend to receive parental leave by semester, 26 weeks at full pay. Other leaves run concurrently.

All regular and casual employees who are new parents may take a 12 week parental leave. Sex or gender is not a factor. Parental leave is a kind of family leave. There is a waiting period of five days, during which accrued time may be used. (Except for the parent who has just taken the medical portion of the leave -- they are deemed to have already served the waiting period.)
