In lieu of taxes the college makes annual payments to the town of Amherst for Fire and Ambulance service and makes an annual contribution to the public schools.
The new president has furthered increased the college's contributions to the town and recently announced a $1.3 million dollar gift to the town library, hospital, and arts center: https://www.amherst.edu/news/press-releases/node/898236
