Percentage of laboratories certified by My Green Lab or an equivalent green laboratory program:
Narrative and/or website URL providing information about the institution’s green laboratory certifications:
Labs are one of the most resource-intensive spaces on a college campus (i.e., energy, water) and generate a distinctly different waste stream from the usual academic and residential waste streams. Our Green Lab program helps minimize the use of energy, water, material goods, and hazardous chemicals in laboratories and promote efficient, effective use of equipment and lab space, and as such improve the sustainability of our labs. The Office of Sustainability hires a Green Labs student fellow who manages and oversees the program. A lab audit / assessment survey (see attached) was completed by the labs in the science building to help provide a baseline and identify opportunities for improved sustainability moving forward. The Green Labs fellow works across labs and with individual labs helping address sustainability challenges, particularly around waste. A Green Labs Guide, based on the survey results and common best practices was developed, and is now avalable on the Green Labs Website:
