Local advocacy
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
AUCA actively engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal and local levels through collaborative projects and initiatives. One significant example is the EcoPark project, a joint effort with the French-Kyrgyz Ecotourism Association (AFKE) and the City Hall of Bishkek, aimed at rehabilitating the Elm Grove of Bishkek. This urban forest, the largest and oldest in Central Asia, has been severely impacted by illegal cutting, construction, and other activities. The project, initiated in 2015, has successfully protected about 10,000 trees and planted around 5,000 new ones. It has also been recognized with COP21 certification from the French Ministry of the Environment for its climate change mitigation efforts. The EcoPark serves as a vital green space, offering environmental education and research opportunities for students and hosting various protection activities.
In addition, AUCA's annual tree planting event aligns with this initiative, reinforcing the commitment to restoring and preserving urban green spaces. This event involves the AUCA community and local stakeholders in planting trees, promoting environmental stewardship, and contributing to the broader goal of urban forest regeneration. Through these efforts, AUCA influences local environmental policies and practices, fostering a more sustainable urban environment.
Regional advocacy
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:
National advocacy
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:
At the national level, AUCA actively engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability by addressing key issues and influencing legislation and ordinances. The university's efforts include advocating for policies that promote environmental protection and sustainable development.
One significant area of advocacy is the promotion of national legislation focused on climate action and environmental conservation. AUCA has supported the development and strengthening of laws aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing environmental regulations. For instance, the institution has contributed to discussions on national carbon reduction strategies and supported legislation that encourages renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency improvements.
In addition to supporting progressive environmental policies, AUCA has also worked against ordinances and practices that hinder sustainability. This includes advocating for stricter regulations on illegal logging and land use, which have been significant issues impacting the region's natural resources. AUCA's involvement in the EcoPark project and the annual tree planting initiative reflects its commitment to counteracting environmental degradation and promoting urban green spaces.
A prominent example of AUCA's national advocacy is its participation in COP28 as part of the Kyrgyzstan delegation. At this global climate conference, AUCA's Sustainability Coordinator, not only represented the university but also engaged in discussions on national climate policies and sustainable development goals. Her contributions emphasized the need for robust national policies that address climate change and support sustainable practices.
Through these advocacy efforts, AUCA plays a crucial role in shaping national environmental policies, driving legislative changes, and fostering a sustainable future for Kyrgyzstan.
