Does the institution have a program designed to incentivize the use of public transportation?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s programs designed to incentivize the use of public transportation:

AUC Bus Services

The American University in Cairo (AUC) maintains an extensive bus service available to all members of the AUC community. Our buses cover 13 routes that travel between the AUC New Cairo and AUC Tahrir Square campus and through neighborhoods all over the city. Buses run on set daily schedules, five days a week, and limited services on Saturdays. For the 13 routes, we have 75 pick-up points and 100 drop-off points. Our comfortable coach buses have reclining seats, window curtains, and free Wi-Fi on board.

Safety Measures

In line with our efforts to keep the AUC community safe, the following measures are implemented for all buses on all of AUC’s bus routes:

  • Drivers will not be permitted to stop or open the bus door until the bus reaches its next stop/final destination.
  • No unaccompanied packages will be accepted for transport to either campus. However, bus riders are still allowed to bring on the bus the necessary materials.
  • Logos/decals used to identify buses serving the AUC community are no longer in place.

Bus Service Subscription

  • Students who use the bus regularly are advised to subscribe for a full year or semester-by-semester for a cheaper trip price.

Does the institution have a car sharing or carpool program?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s car sharing or carpool program:

Carpooling is a well-known method for reducing the number of cars on the road, air pollution, and carbon emissions. It essentially enables one car to do the work of multiple cars and also helps reduce the traffic congestion ubiquitous in Greater Cairo. In late 2012, the University adopted a policy of waiving on-campus parking fees for carpoolers, it states that “Carpooling with another member of the AUC community will allow you to park on campus for free."

AUC incentivizes carpooling to campus by allowing carpoolers to park for free as stated within the University’s parking policy . As of September 2023, designated parking spots for members of the community who carpool to campus were introduced on campus. Carpoolers may park in special reserved slots available at parking lot near Gate 5 and Omar Mohsen Gate. Check AUC's statement on reserved carpool parking
