Narrative outlining the institutional boundary used to complete this report:

American University has two contiguous campuses used for academics and student housing: the main campus on Massachusetts Avenue NW, which includes Katzen Arts Center and Nebraska Hall, and the East Campus on the opposite side of Nebraska Avenue NW. The Washington College of Law is located at the Tenley Campus located in Tenleytown, approximately 1 mile down Nebraska Avenue NW. Additionally, AU owns several other buildings off campus. Included in our instituational boundary for STARS are 4200 Wisconsin Ave NW (Greenberg Theatre), Spring Valley Building, and 4401 Conneticut Ave NW.

The gross floor area of the report does not include campus garages and two unoccupied buildings on Main Campus, Beeghly and Rockwood. The report also excludes AU's off campus building space at 3201 New Mexico Avenue NW. AU owns the building and has some offices there, but there are additional tenants that are independently operated and not part of university operations (dry cleaning, restaurants, deli, other offices).

AU acquired Airlie Berkshire Farm in 2016. Airlie is a 20 acre farm in Warrenton, Virginia and operates independently and is not included in the report.

Notes about the information provided for this credit:

Data for this section was updated for the 2024 fiscal year.

Total gross floor area of building space has decreased from the previous 2021 submission as this report excludes all campus garages, and two buildings that have become unoccupied since the last report.Total gross floor area will increase in the future as construction is currently underway for AU's Meltzer Center, which will open and be operational in Fall 2025.

As of the 2021 campus plan, AU has continued to maintain a supply of housing for 67 percent of the full-time undergraduate student population, retaining the standard established in the 2011 Campus Plan and ensuring that sufficient housing capacity is available to support the undergraduate student population.
