Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal 
The institute produces policy-relevant research on various carbon removal technologies, especially when used at broad scales. This includes examining socio-environmental impacts, co-benefits, and governance related to these technologies.

Center for Environmental Policy
The Center for Environmental Policy's mission is to improve environmental governance in the United States by informing and educating future environmental leaders, while promoting innovative technology and policies that protect the air, water, land, and other resources on which our economy and lives depend.

Center for Environment, Community, and Equity 
CECE’s objective is to work with students, faculty, and community partners to chart a long-term vision and audacious roadmap for meeting the environmental challenges that lie ahead of our country and global community. It aims to catalyze scholarship and efforts that reach across disciplines to drive action and public impact. CECE’s work is organized under four main themes:

  1. Climate and Sustainability
  2. Environmental Equity and Justice
  3. Food, Agriculture, Land
  4. Water, Oceans, Fisheries.

Center for Environmental Filmmaking
The mission of the Center for Environmental filmaking is to advance documentary filmmaking, photography and new forms of immersive and interactive media as vital catalysts for raising awareness, promoting solutions and mobilizing movements. It's committed to finding new ways to diversify the field, address inequality and engage new audiences.

Center for Latin American and Latino Studies 
The Center for Latin American & Latino Studies (CLALS) is a multidisciplinary center harnessing expertise from throughout the American University community and with counterparts around the world to serve as a catalyst for creation of knowledge about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino communities in the United States. Its work reflects enduring commitment to social inclusion, good governance, human security, equitable international relations, and understanding of societal challenges in the region. The center's pro projects address Inclusion, Governance, Security, International Relations, Environment, and Regional and Country Studies. 

Antiracist Research & Policy Center
The Antiracist Research and Policy Center is an interdisciplinary hub for the research and practice of racial justice and intersectional liberation. It convenes scholars, educators, community-based changemakers, cultural workers, and policy advocates in sustainable and equitable collaborations.The center prioritizes Race and Carcerality, Reproductive Justice, Educational Access and Equity, and Climate, Land, and Environmental Justice.

Center on Health, Risk, and Safety
The American University Center on Health, Risk, and Society (CHRS) supports a thriving multi-disciplinary community of scholars that conducts research on health and health-related issues using the tools and lens of social science. CHRS scholars focus on five key areas and their intersections with structural inequities related (but not limited) to race, gender, income, ability and citizenship. Some of the topics which are addressed in these key areas are listed below:

  • Sex, Sexuality, and Reproduction (e.g., Reproductive politics/health/aging, LGBTQI health, HIV/AIDS)
  • Migration, Displacement, and Disruption (e.g., Immigrant/migrant/refugee health, Deportation, Homelessness, Gentrification)
  • Violence and the Carceral State (e.g., Surveillance, Mass incarceration, Inter/Intra personal violence, Gun violence)
  • Wellbeing and Social Belonging (e.g., Aging and later life course, Intergenerational relationships, Mental health, Substance use)
  • Environment, Climate, and Place (e.g., Environmental justice, Food insecurity, Occupational health and safety, Community mobilization)

Institute on Disability & Public Policy

The Institute on Disability and Public Policy at American University is a multidisciplinary, cross-campus research center that creates and disseminates knowledge that enables all persons to participate effectively in local, national, and global governance through the use of accessible information and communication technologies. Core focus areas for the institute include:

  • Global, Regional and National Disability Policy

  • Inclusive Sustainable Development

  • Accessible Global Governance

  • Inclusive Cities and Urban Development

  • Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction

  • Information and Communication Technologies for Development

  • Accessible Robotics

  • Accessible Cyberlearning

  • Accessibility, Assistive Technologies and Universal Design
