Description of the process used to identify the institution’s sustainability research:
The Office of Sustainability sent out a survey to faculty asking them to report research they are conducting about sustainability. The faculty list was then reviewed to identify research that was not reported on the survey. Faculty websites were checked and departments heads were asked if anyone was missing from the list.
The survey was for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Description of the sustainability research incentives for academic staff:
The Center for Environment, Community and Equity selects receipients for the Faculty Research Incubator Program. This is a funding program designed to launch exciting, interdisciplinary work on the environment conducted by faculty teams from programs across campus.

The Sustainability Fund funds campus sustainability research projects proposed by the university community. The program is open to any member of the university community, including faculty and staff.

Description of the sustainability research incentives for students:
The Sustainability Fund (https://www.american.edu/about/sustainability/get-involved/sustainability-fund.cfm ) funds campus sustainability research projects proposed by members of the university community. This program is open to any member of the university community, including students.
The Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship provides ventures with mentors, resources, workshop, and start up grants. Ventures include the Energy Democracy Coalition focused on a just transition to clean energy and The Food for Thought Foundation, Inc. aimed at irradicating food deserts.
